Collage FUNdamentals: Magazine collage

Cost: $25 (Aus)

This class no longer live, but the link to the private classroom contains a recorded video replay of the full live class, access to all the files, videos and documents needed to complete the class successfully.

Join Niamh Baly for a class, hosted in a private Facebook group to learn the basics of magazine collage in the style of Teesha Moore (the Godmother of all Art Journaling) and Dyan Reavley (Teesha’s apprentice). We will cover topics such as gathering images, storing your collage fodder, creating unique figures and frames, altering images, plus how to play with different fonts and handwriting styles to match your weird and wonderful creations.

This class is a mixed media class, so by its nature will always lead to being a unique piece of art. It is not possible to replicate the sample piece exactly but I will give you all the tips and tricks to create something similar with the supplies you have on hand.

How it works:
Niamh will go LIVE in the class private group at the specified class time. You can gather your supplies and create right along with Niamh as she teaches. You can comment, ask questions, and interact with other students. You can also share your work in the group. If you happen to miss the live broadcast, or if you want to re-watch it, it will be permanently saved in the group Video section.
How long you have access:

  • We will send you a confirmation email and a link to join the private Facebook group from my email ( This may take up to 48 hrs. Please check your junk/spam account if you don’t receive an email within that time or email me directly.

    Supply List: Substrates:

  • Art journal (I’ll be using my large Dylusions journal) or A4 card. A junk journal is a great place for these figures if you have one.

  • Magazines – I would suggest grab 4: 2 fashion magazines, a mixed content magazine (eg: Better homes and gardens – has gardens, food, craft, homewares) and a national geographic type magazine (more nature/bird/animal type images) – Ask around to see if you can get these magazines for free – or try op shops to get them cheap.

  • Old calendars can work well for this too and have a wide range of images to use. Tools:

  • Tool kit like scissors (sharp enough to cut through thick card), paint brushes, wipes

  • Black and white journaling pens

  • Glue stick and double sided tape

  • Posca paint pens – assorted colours

  • Archival ink, black and assorted colours if you have them

  • Any stencils you like (smaller pattern ones are good – eg: Tim Holtz ones)

  • Extra sticky double sided tape (this usually has a red liner on it)

  • Washi tape (glitter and metallics look great)

Additional products: These aren’t necessary but add to the finished piece

  • Chipboard shapes (wings, crowns, decorative flourishes etc)

  • Stamped words or phrases on tissue paper (or the Dina Wakley collage tissue words) or

the Tim Holtz/Dylusions backchat stickers (snarky works well for these types of collages)
